Position Information

The Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic Gymnastics Instructor to coach multiple levels in the boys and girls recreational program, including teaching recreational preschool classes in the gym. This employee will also provide support and direction to athletes and provide input to help shape the recreational program.



The Arlington County Gymnastics program supports the competitive girls’ team, the Arlington Aerials, a competitive boys’ team, the Arlington Tigers, and a robust recreational class program. Our class program offers over 250 classes yearly and teams compete in 10 to 15 meets each season. The program is housed in the Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center, a 30,000-sf. facility that includes over 20,000 sf. of gymnastics equipment.



Specific Duties:


  • Coaching all levels of the boys or girls recreational classes (Level 1 Beginner, Level 1 Advanced, Level 2 Beginner, Level 2 Advanced, Level 3+) through positive coaching methods;

  • Developing and implementing a progressive gymnasts training plan for recreational classes, including training in strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance;

  • Observing students during classes and camps to help determine the needs for individual or recreational program improvements;

  • Teaching recreational classes and assisting with special events, open gyms, birthday parties and workshops;

  • Closely following the appropriate curriculum or lesson plan(s) for the class being coached; making coaching changes on a case-by-case nature for individuals or classes based on abilities compared to the given lesson plan;

  • Maintaining an efficient class rotation schedule to ensure athletes have a positive and empowering experience;

  • Attending required meetings and trainings, maintaining a clean and safe working environment, and performing periodic equipment safety checks;

  • Maintaining compliance with current COVID-19 protocols;

  • Establishing and maintaining professionalism while supervising students and coaches during classes; and

  • Performing other duties as assigned.


The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience teaching the development of skills and proper techniques in area of specialty, the ability to motivate and effectively communicate with students, parents, and coworkers. Exercising mature judgment and sound decision-making, along with basic computer, Google Docs, and digital information management skills are essential.



Selection Criteria

Minimum:


  • High school diploma/GED;

  • 800 hours of technical experience in Gymnastics (may come from a variety of sources, such as work experiences, volunteer experiences or formal athletic participation); and

  • Must have at least 50 hours as an instructor.



Substitution:
Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.



Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Bachelor's degree or higher in related field, and/or experience with one or more of the following:


  • Gymnastics recreational instructor;

  • Compulsory and optional level coaching for both men’s and women’s gymnastics teams;

  • Working in a USA Gymnastics Member club setting; and/or

  • Ability to lift equipment and work with spotting children.



Special Requirements

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment, which may include the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.


Additional Information

Work Hours: 40-hours a week. Schedule may vary based on the facilities schedule of events. Must be available to work varying shifts which may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.



Must obtain and/or maintain all required certifications including USA Gymnastics, CPR/AED, and Safe Sport.
