With the addition of the $70 million Midco Arena, Augustana Athletics is launching the first collegiate hockey program in South Dakota in 2023 and it will also be the first athletics program to compete at Division I that calls Sioux Falls home. Currently with 21 NCAA Division II sports programs, Augustana Athletics is focused on building champions in the classroom, in competition and in the community, highlighted by three team national championships since 2016. Viking Athletics finished #7 nationally in the Division II Learfield Director's Cup in 2021-22 and also won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) All Sports Award.
Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant Augustana University (SD) is seeking qualified applicants for an Athletics Communication Graduate Assistant position, a 12-month appointment, averaging 29 hours per week, within our Athletics department. This position includes a salary of $10.80 per hour, significant tuition assistance, and a limited meal plan (all taxable benefits).
Duties include, but are not limited to: • Organize and record game statistics at athletic events and provide timely reporting of results to local, conference, regional, and national media outlets. • Assist with facilitate day-to-day operations within the sports information office (produce weekly notes for certain sports, submit players of the week nominations, supervision of work-study students, exchange of rosters and statistics with opponents, and respond to e-mail and phone requests and special requests of coaches and other College staff.) • Work with the Assistant Athletic Director to hire additional staff as necessary for home athletic events. • Work with the Assistant Athletic Director with scheduling and coordinating student athlete and coaches' interviews for assigned sports. • Assist and help coordinate radio or television with outside broadcast agencies that help produce or air the home athletic events. • Serve as the primary media contact for assigned sports (at least three) • Write and/or coordinate storylines, game notes, news releases, programs and feature stories for assigned sports • Develop and post social media content that engages the Viking fan base and maintain web pages for assigned sports • Produce/keep statistics and record books for assigned sports • Coordinate professional photography needs; produce video content for assigned sports • Work with different types of software integral to a comprehensive sports information department such as StatCrew, NLS and the Adobe Creative Suite • Establish and maintain positive relations with media through strong interpersonal communication skills • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, sport management or a related field • Ability to gain entrance into Augustana Graduate School Preferred Qualifications: • Exceptional writing skills and experience. • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with administrative, coaching and college administrative staff. • Develop and post social media content that engages the Viking fan base and maintain web pages for assigned sports. • Be able to work alone, one-on-one, or as part of a larger team. • Flexibility to travel and work nights and weekends as needed. • Knowledge of news, reporting, and editing principles, practices, and techniques.
