The Department of Student Health and Wellness (SHW) seeks to hire five medical scribes. Scribes are essential members of our healthcare team and work directly with patients under the supervision of licensed medical staff. This position is ideal for students pursuing health careers who are taking a gap year between undergraduate and graduate education. This is a wage position with an expectation of 40 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters and a start date of early August 2023. Please note that there is a 1500-hour limit for this position and all other wage assignments at UVA also count towards the 1500-hour limit.



Medical scribes provide research and clinical assistance to faculty by performing on-site medical transcription. They work directly with patients to obtain patient data and specimens as required by protocols. They enter data into project and medical record databases and assist with documentation. They may accompany physicians on patient encounters to record accurate medical information, including notes of communication, past medical records, laboratory results, etc.



Specific responsibilities may include:
  • Obtaining patient specimens, including nasal specimens from patients with suspected COVID.

  • Preparing charts for specified visits, such as travel and dermatology.

  • Utilizing equipment to perform point-of-care testing.

  • Assisting in enrolling patients in active clinical research studies.

  • Assisting in quality improvement projects.

  • Assisting in public health events, such as mass vaccination events.

  • Performing phlebotomy and other laboratory services under the direction of the laboratory supervisor.

  • Assisting psychiatry providers.

  • Scribing into the medical record will only occur after a full semester of training and will be interspersed with other duties as noted above.

  • Other duties as assigned.

The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This position will require an education verification, drug screen, and health screen.



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a healthcare or science-related field.

  • Experience: No experience required.

  • Licensure: None.




PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings and programs.
