BUS DRIVER Positions also located in Cary, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Zebulon, Morrisville, Wendell, Apex, Holly Springs, Garner, Fuquay-Varina POSITION PURPOSE: Under general supervision, operates a school bus on assigned route(s) and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation forstudents. Performs pre-and post-trip inspections of the bus; operates a bus; obeys all traffic laws and school bus regulations whileoperating the bus; abides by all safety regulations and standards for school buses; and maintains discipline of students assigned to ridethe bus. Completes and submits all required reports and secures the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES •        Working knowledge of the proper care and operation of a school bus and safe driving skills •        Knowledge of specific rules and regulations governing the operation of a school bus •        Knowledge of first aid techniques and ability to give physical assistance to special needs students; Effective time management skills •        Effective customer service skills •        Ability to elicit the cooperation of student passengers with respect to school bus safety rules, including activities of special needs students •        Ability to understand and comply with the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) Code of Ethics •        Ability to follow written and oral instructions •        Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff and the public. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE •        High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS •        Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license and has held a driver’s license for a minimum of 2 years •        Hold and maintain a NC Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and P&S Endorsement (Passengers and School Bus). CDLtraining will be provided through WCPSS, if needed •        Commercial driver license (CDL) holders must meet the medical qualifications set by the NC General Statute Medical SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: •        Must be 18 years of age; •        Must pass Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing at hire, randomly, and upon request. o        Within past 12 months         No conviction of any moving violation         No pending charge of any moving violation         No more than one charge of any moving violation, regardless of disposition. o        Within past 60 months         No more than three charges of moving violations of any kind         No conviction of a moving violation combined with any other charge of a moving violation         No charge of DWI or DUI         No charge for reckless driving         No charge for passing a stopped school bus. o        Within past 10 years         No suspension or revocation of the driving privilege, other than for such status offenses as lapsed, insurance,failure to appear in court, and failure to comply with out-of-state citation, provided that there be no more thanone suspension or revocation for such status offenses within the past 10-years. o        Indefinite         No more than one charge of DWI or DUI. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: •        First Aid and CPR certification; •        Blood borne pathogens certification; •        Experience driving a commercial vehicle; •        Experience using computers and other office equipment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1.        Ensures safety and care of students that are boarding, riding, and departing the school bus; operates wheelchair lifts as needed. 2.        Complies with Transportation Department Bus Driver’s Agreement standards; upholds a high standard of bus conduct at all times;attends bus safety meetings. 3.        Checks the school bus thoroughly to ensure that no students are left on the school bus at each school in the morning and after the last drop of each route segment in the afternoon; secures the school bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run orroute. 4.        Transports only authorized students; discharges students only at the authorized school or bus stop locations. 5.        Reports infractions of school bus safety rules to the principal or designee. 6.        Obeys all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the school bus. 7.        Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and completes checklist; complies with standards of bus cleanliness. 8.        Operates the assigned vehicle on the assigned route(s) and schedule as provided by the Transportation Office. 9.        Completes and submits all reports relating to transportation. 10.        Informs appropriate staff of any students added or deleted from route which may necessitate a change in route or bus stop. 11.        Reports observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus by completing and submitting observations on the mechanical complaint form. 12.        Maintains professional relationships with students, the parents/guardians of the students transported, and with school system staff. 13.        Conducts emergency evacuation drills to ensure efficiency of procedures and that WCPSS is in compliance according to mandated requirements. 14.        Performs other related duties as assigned. WORKING CONDITIONS: PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Must be able to use a variety of office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. Must be able to communicate effectively. At times requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical requirements are consistent with those for medium work. Department can contact the school’s Physical Therapist for assistance, if needed, with proper lifting techniques. WORK ENVIRONMENT Must be able to work in a school bus or school transportation vehicle and come into direct contact with school system staff, students, and parents. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to loud noise levels; fumes or airborne particles; vibrations from driving a bus; and various road and traffic conditions. The temperature on the bus could be cold or hot, depending on the weather.
