Health Education Specialists I have a primary focus of planning and implementing health education and promotion programs across a variety of content areas that will impact attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors to improve health. This position develops and implements best-practice strategies to improve the health of individuals and communities in coordination with Health Education Specialist II and Community Health Coordinator. Responsibilities also include assessing the needs, resources, and capacities of the community; planning, implementing, and managing health education programs; conducting evaluation and research related to health education and promotion programs; managing grant requirements and being aware of program budgets and expenses. Health Education Specialists serve as a health resource for the community and support the community in behavior change through promoting and advocating for public health.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Designs and executes specific and culturally-sensitive health education activities, including community-based classes and interventions, health fairs, screenings, etc. both on-site at the Hult Center and by traveling to service locations, as assigned that address the community s most concerning health needs.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates health education and promotion programs to impact attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors for improved health using evidence-based and research-based curriculum as appropriate.
  • Applies evidence-informed theories, models, and/or strategies to health promotion programs.
  • Identifies, develops, delivers, and evaluates health communication messages using a variety of communication strategies, methods, and techniques.
  • Provides health education programming, training, consultation, assistance, and guidance to individuals, groups, and organizations.
  • Serves as a health education resource person by maintaining a depth of knowledge and understanding of the following: current community health data through local community health assessments, services offered by local organizations and partners for appropriate referrals, opportunities to enhance and refine health promotion programs.
  • Advocates for health, health equity, and health promotion by engaging stakeholders and leading advocacy initiatives related to health.

Manages Grant Requirements As Dictated By Grantors.
  • Serves as program coordinator over assigned grants/programs.
  • Contributes to conducting, implementing, and monitoring strategic planning for assigned grants in coordination with Health Education Specialist II and Community Health Coordinator
  • Selects, adapts, or creates evaluation tools to collect data.
  • Aware of grant reporting deadlines, benchmarks, and expectations and works with Health Education Specialist II to provide necessary reporting information
  • Collects, analyzes, interprets, and synthesizes assessment findings to identify community needs, improve health promotion programs, and communicate findings to priority populations, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Manages program budget and expenses; assist Health Education Specialist II in preparing program budgets; Monitors budget performance as it relates to assigned projects.
  • Works with Health Education Specialist II and Marketing and Development Coordinator to designs and implement marketing strategies to promote health promotion programs and funders.
  • Maintains knowledge of multiple funding sources and the requirements set forth by these funding sources.
  • Assists in writing grant proposals for new and existing funding opportunities.
  • Advocates for health, health equity, and health promotion by engaging stakeholders and leading advocacy initiatives related to health. This includes handling complaints about controversial topics (reproductive health, for example); meeting with superintendents, parent organizations, news & media representatives to clarify operations on their subject areas of expertise

  • Participates in year-round health education programming.
  • Participates in monthly staff meetings.
  • Participates in public relation and fundraising activities on behalf of the Center.
  • Represents the interests of the Center with local school districts, United Way, community based agencies, and other professionals in the community.
  • Represents the interests of the Center with local businesses and corporate partners in the community.
  • Participates in professional associations, coalitions, and networks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria
  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Education:

Bachelor s Degree in Community, Public Health, Education or related field.

Experience:

Previous experience working with diverse populations

License(s)/Certification(s):

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver s License in the State of Illinois.

Must possess and maintain auto insurance.

Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) must be run annually.

Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).

Proficient in computer work specifically all Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint).

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities/hospitals.

Required to drive your own vehicle for business purposes.
