The Role

The Senior Director of Network and Network Security will report to the VP, Cloud and Digital Infrastructure and will provide technical expertise and senior leadership to manage all aspects of network architecture, engineering, and operations for Moderna’s global infrastructure, including wide-area networks, multi cloud connectivity, and campus/corporate networks. This is a critical role with overall technical operations responsibility and accountability to deliver best-in-class network availability, security, and performance to all internal and external stakeholders. He/she/they should be able to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support new technical solutions, tools, and processes to improve end-user experience, and maximize business value and efficiencies.

This is a highly visible leadership role as part of the Cloud and Digital Infrastructure Leadership Team, and critical to the success of our Cloud and digital infrastructure capabilities as we scale our global business. The successful candidate will have responsibility and accountability across several key areas, including network strategy, architecture, planning & continuous improvement efforts, tools selection, operations, and administration. He/She will have a proven track record of driving network transformation of Cloud and on-premises network infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have depth in network operations and engineering and must possess the right combination of strategic thinking and operational excellence.

Here’s What You’ll Do

  • Provide senior technical leadership and expertise across LAN, WLAN, WAN, VPN, WAF, and VPN operating environments supporting multiple facilities both on-premises and in cloud infrastructure environments.

  • Drive modernization, automation, optimization to continuously improve operational effectiveness, agility, performance, availability and cost of the network services and staff.

  • Support modernized architecture and services including cloud services and SDN

  • Build and manage vendor relationships and drive cost optimization

  • Establish best-practice methodologies based on metrics-based KPIs for incident/change/problem management in a global, 24x7, high-availability, mission critical environment

  • Drive the development of innovative network operations processes and tools from concept to delivery

  • Provide project leadership for network technology deployments for campus LAN, WAN, wireless network and events network to manage demands from projects and technology upgrades including recommendations for vendor tools/solutions and global alignment of networks.

  • Oversee network operations projects, including budgeting, planning, implementation, maintenance, administration, staffing and logistics.

  • Strong understanding of budgets and financials and measuring business value with ability to manage projects to budgets.

  • Develop and implement hybrid and multi-cloud network strategy and roadmap in alignment with enterprise goals and objectives.

  • Mentor, manage and motivate a high-performing team of managers and engineering professionals and set clear priorities to achieve enterprise goals and KPIs.

  • Manage oversight of complex network operations processes based on a combination of vendors, custom solutions, and internal resources offshore and onshore.

  • Support adoption of new technologies and tools and recommend capability improvements to network and security operations.

  • Direct the continuous and secure operation, administration and maintenance of the corporate computing and networking infrastructure

  • Evaluate next gen network technologies for establishing and sustaining enterprise standards and policies.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, plan, and implement network solutions that meet business, security, legal, compliance and DR/BCP requirements.

  • Analyze network from a cost, capacity, and forecast perspective, and evaluate new network operations technologies and applications, and establish blueprints complying with security standards and policies.

  • Develop strategic roadmaps to ensure network operations goals are met.

  • Work closely with other departments to proactively ensure network operations capabilities are capable of handling emerging and future business requirements.

  • Ensure service-level targets are met and address all service-level complaints.

  • Ensure network operations are conducted according to corporate standards, and in compliance with external standards as defined in company objectives

  • Establish processes to align with enterprise operations incident management, change management and problem management processes as well as network security function.

  • Provide subject matter expertise in interactions with partners and customers, program manage collaboration projects externally and internally.

  • Responsible for efficient management of technology portfolio including hardware, WAN circuits and contracts, contract services

  • Design monitoring and status dashboards to reflect capacity, health, and state of network environments across the globe.

  • Develop network self-healing automation to detect, analyze, and act upon network capacity and health events.

  • Develop CI/CD pipelines and branching strategies to enable automated provisioning and orchestration of infrastructure resources to non-prod and prod environments through foundational platforms and capabilities.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • 15+ years of experience in the IT field.

  • 10+ years of strong experience directly related to network infrastructure (i.e. AWS, Google Cloud, Cisco Routers/Switches, VPN technologies).

  • Experience managing broad enterprise Networks (LAN, WAN, Firewalls, etc.) across multiple sites and cloud environments.

  • BS level technical degree or equivalent experience required; Computer Science or Math background preferred; MS degree desired.

  • Experience working in regulated environments with strict infrastructure change control processes.

  • Experience building a robust multi-account cloud strategy across numerous stakeholders and diverse deployment stacks.

  • Expertise in disaster recovery, application resiliency, business continuity, and data integrity.

  • Experience focusing on standardization, naming conventions, best practices, and monitoring/enforcement.

  • Expertise with AWS technologies such as VPC, Route 53 Resolver, Route 53, VGW, IGW, NACL, SG, Transit Gateway. Landing Zone.

  • Expertise with GCP networking and Cisco switches/routers.

  • Experience in managing and developing a close-knit, high-performing team.
