Job Purpose:
The Juvenile Correctional Officer, provides youth with a safe, secure environment that fosters healthy decision-making and environment conducive to rehabilitation. This position is assigned to specific security posts to ensure orderly facility operations and the safety and well-being of all youth and staff. This position’s role and responsibilities directly impacts the youth and the ability of the agency to provide safe and secure rehabilitative opportunities for youth.
Job Functions:
- Ensures the safety and security of youth and staff within assigned facility and by performing assigned post responsibilities to include patrol and supervision of youth. Initiates and maintains youth headcount and completes all required reporting and daily logs. Conducts routine and unannounced security inspections per agency policy.
- Recognizes and responds to both disruptions and emergency situations including, but not limited to behavioral crisis situations, physical and verbal altercations, disturbances and escapes in a manner consistent with agency policy and procedure as well as federal and state law. Uses verbal de-escalation strategies and a graduated array of responses other than the use of physical force. Provides counseling to population as a functional treatment plan.
- Monitors, observes and documents youth behavior, attitude and performance of institutionalized population. Conveys both positive and negative observations and interactions to mental health clinicians and medical staff. Serves as a member of the local unit team meetings to develop a rehabilitative program for youth.
- Transports youth as needed and supervises youth movement to ensure that all youth are provided treatment, education, recreational, vocational, and judicial activities. Ensures juveniles receive proper medical attention as needed.
- Serves as a mentor/coach for new Juvenile Correctional Officers and provides school security as needed.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $35,000.00 - $62,000.00 per year
