WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU'LL DO

As Assistant General Counsel, Health & Wellbeing, you will become a business partner and trusted advisor to the high growth Health & Wellbeing division in North America.  This will require having a service mindset and the ability to manage a broad range of legal matters that arise within the Global Business Unit.  As a senior legal generalist, you will have a unique role as an agile in-house expert serving 6 Operating Companies with broad responsibilities ranging from marketing and advertising law, FDA/FTC compliance, data privacy, e-commerce, international expansion, litigation support, corporate governance, government affairs, and more.  This is an exceptional opportunity for a highly commercially astute and experienced, purpose driven lawyer.  You will often be the first point of contact for the Health & Wellbeing business with regard to all things legal and you will also coordinate closely with your North America Unilever colleagues to tackle problems and come up with creative, business-friendly solutions.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Identify risks and counsel the H&W Global Business Unit in NA across a broad range of legal areas, including advertising claims and communications, intellectual property, e-commerce, quality & regulatory, M&A, data privacy, and more.

  • Advise on compliance and legal issues related to OTC drug products, dietary supplements, medical devices, skin/hair products, and more for the US and rest of world in collaboration with global colleagues.

  • Conduct trainings for H&W in areas such as employment, contracts, business integrity, claims and marketing.

  • Coordinate and assist HR colleagues with matters related to employees and policies.

  • Draft guidance documents and policies for NA to align with Unilever’s vision and business objectives, partnering with relevant colleagues to enable innovation and, as needed, product registration.

  • Closely monitor trends and anticipating local U.S. policies and regulations, including import and export regulations.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align on business strategy and advocacy opportunities.

  • Drive development in your expertise area across the North America legal team as well as within other x-functional partners globally.

  • Utilize FDA regulatory expertise to manage US related regulatory inquiries as well as competitive legal challenges related to product compliance, claims and campaigns.

  • Collaborate with our Litigation team to defend against demand letters and publicly filed lawsuits.

  • Collaborate with your NA and Global Legal colleagues along with teams of cross functional stakeholders to drive world class legal business partnering, identifying opportunities for enhanced flexibility and working as part of agile squads to develop new tools to support core business activities.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED

  • Bar admission in at least one state with preference in California and/or New York

  • 10+ years of legal experience, preferably with early stage or high growth companies

  • General experience counselling clients in broad range of legal issues such as marketing, data privacy, e-commerce, international expansion, corporate governance, employment, IP, and more.

  • Broad experience and deep expertise in FDA and relevant state regulations applied to OTC drug products, dietary supplements, and medical devices.

  • Established expertise in consumer health & wellness innovation, with substantial experience applying relevant U.S. federal and state regulatory schemes, issue spotting and developing strategies to address potential barriers.

  • Strong background in claim substantiation and experience with quality incident and recall management.

  • Ability to think on your feet, using judgement and experience to quickly analyze issues and propose legally and commercially viable solutions.

  • Experience managing a high-pressure workload that requires covering multiple tasks and collaborating with several internal and external stakeholders simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Positive, creative and “one-team” mindset.

  • Ability to work independently but also build relationships and become a true business partner.

Pay: The pay range for this position is $135,600 to $203,300. Unilever takes into consideration a wide range of factors that are utilized in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, qualifications and education, and other business and organizational needs.

Bonus: This position is bonus eligible.

Long-Term Incentive (LTI): This position is LTI eligible.
