Summary of Position:

The primary responsibility for the Quality Control Microbiologist is to confirm the microbial safety of raw materials and finished products, establishing raw material specifications, and verifying the identify of plant-based raw materials following Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP, 21 CFR 111) and Paragon Laboratories Procedures (PLP’s). Occasionally the responsibilities may include supporting other departments such as but not limited to, Receiving, Manufacturing, Packaging, and Shipping. The microbiologist will report to the department manager and assist in other QA/QC activities as needed. This person should have effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform microbial limit tests on raw materials, in-process blends, and finished products and review compliance to applicable specification.
  • Receive Raw Materials per Paragon Laboratories’ standard operating procedure.
  • Perform FTIR ID testing for all incoming raw materials.
  • Monitor production/packaging equipment and facility for cleaning effectiveness through environmental monitoring, swabbing for vitamin B2, allergen, compressed air monitoring and De-ionized water filtration system.
  • Perform organoleptic analysis on incoming raw materials.
  • Perform botanical identification tests of raw materials through optical microscopy, high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC).
  • Develop new identification methods for incoming raw materials.
  • Assist in revising current raw material identification methods, PLP’s and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Maintain sample log for Raw material, In-process, finished product and stability testing.
  • Create and track raw material specifications.
  • Assist in investigations.
  • Maintain and update reagents logs/MSDS.
  • Assist in maintaining the laboratory supplies.
  • Participate in general laboratory activities.
  • Assist in generation and the review of Certificates of Analysis of finished products, labels and product reconciliation sheets as needed.
  • Communicate information appropriately, accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Assist management as new responsibilities are assigned to support cGMP regulatory requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology or similar science from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 0-2 years of related laboratory experience.
  • The Quality control microbiologist should have the knowledge or familiarity with the microbial limit tests.
