The Humane League (THL) is a global nonprofit ending the abuse of animals raised for food. THL fosters a high-energy culture of teamwork and mission-driven problem solving, and we have earned recognition as Top Charity from Animal Charity Evaluators for all of their rating periods. Over the past few years, we've grown to a staff of 90+ talented individuals dispersed across the country and around the world.
We are currently growing our organization and after assessing the needs of THL now and in the future we have devised a new structure for the Operations department adding a number of positions. These roles will allow us to serve our growing organization moving forward and improve both operational efficiency and support to help realize our goals for THL's culture and people-centered approach.
YOUR OPPORTUNITY
As Vice President of People, you will develop and implement strategy to meet the organization's human resources goals for an impactful, sustainable, and equitable culture for THL's global team in alignment with our mission, core values, and vision. You will ensure THL has the organization has the people-centric practices to achieve our mission of ending the abuse of animals raised for food.
As Vice President of People, you will ensure the organization prioritizes employee experience where staff of all identities and experiences belong and have what they need to thrive. You are collaborative, empathetic, and strategic, bringing vision, innovation, and deep practical experience to THL. Reporting directly to the COO, you will collaborate closely with our Chief of Staff, General Counsel, VP of DEI and VP of Operations to meet organizational goals and priorities.
We want you because you possess a relationship- and values-centered approach, and successful experience operationalizing a vision and leading change management efforts across a growing organization.
This is a full-time, remote position. This position requires domestic travel equivalent to approximately 4-6 trips per year. We are only able to consider applicants who possess United States work authorization.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Providing thought leadership and guidance for the President, COO, General Counsel, and other senior staff to ensure a people-focused organization with an equity lens
Create and implement an HR agenda that drive's THL's people and culture vision
Lead the organization's People team, including talent acquisition, training & retention, compensation & benefits, and other key HR functions, providing guidance as they update policies and implement systems to ensure equity, belonging, and a cohesive and meaningful employee experience across our global organization
Draft and implement organizational policies and procedures related to People Operations, employee rights, and THL's employee handbook in line with best practices to support a team with national and international employees
Maintain up to date knowledge of international, federal, and state laws
In collaboration with the General Counsel, ensure the correct interpretation and implementation of federal and state labor laws, OSHA, EEO, compensation and payout requirements, 401k plans, taxes, and any other laws as well as best practices regarding employees. You must have respect for confidentiality and compliance setups.
Foster a culture where employees of all identities and lived experiences feel included, have a sense of belonging, and experience high levels of trust
Oversee the development of plans related to recruitment, performance management, benefits administration, compensation, and professional development all through the lens of DEI
Manage the contractual relationship with international THL entities, including coordinating administrative functions globally, where applicable
Oversee payroll for a multi-state and multi-country employees through our third parities
Manages the overall budget for the People team

The ideal candidate will possess most, if not all the following qualities, skills, and characteristics:
You are a skilled and passionate leader with 10+ years of progressive experience in an HR role
You have a minimum of 2 years of experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion
You have significant management experience, with strength in fostering a team culture of inclusion and belonging, and recruiting, coaching, and empowering others to meet or exceed their goals, develop their skills and performance, and grow their levels of accountability
Experience in writing policies for company HR commitments including hiring, and workplace complaints. You have experience implementing contractual agreements, confidentiality, and compensation structures, all ensuring the goals and interests of an organization.
Demonstrated success serving as a senior leader in a mission-driven organization
You are a strategic action-orientated individual with a track record of success operationalizing a vision and leading change management efforts
Effective written and verbal communication, with strong emotional intelligence, deep listening skills, and the ability to connect across difference
Impeccable judgment, with the ability to identify the root of issues and effectively resolve conflicts
A collaborative, solution-focused, and low-ego work style with a commitment to continuous growth and improvement
Dedication to THL's philosophy and mission; demonstrated interest in animal welfare and animal protection.
Salary range $145,266 - $160,602, to commensurate with experience.
