MANUFACTURING Shift SUPERVISOR

Background & Purpose of the Job:

This position is responsible for key aspects of the integrated manufacturing process.   This position also has an overall business responsibility.

What You’ll Do:

All Manufacturing Supervisors are responsible for the following:

  • Ensuring that the production lines operate efficiently, safely, and manufacture a high quality product.
  • Training – Supervisors are responsible for the delivery of both technical and additional training programs.
  • Employee Relations– the Supervisor plays a role in the engagement of manufacturing personnel in terms of leading, coaching, and promoting the values of the business.  All Supervisors must be mindful of what a workplace culture is and how to maintain it in a positive manner.
  • Terms and Conditions – it is the responsibility of the Supervisor to make sure that the Unilever policies (handbook) and procedures are communicated and understood.   Disciplinary actions, when necessary, should be administered in a way that is consistent with the coaching approach of the business.
  • Safety – the expectation of all supervisors is to be actively involved with safety leadership in the workplace.
  • GMPs-the expectation of all supervisors is to actively promote and oversee GMPs.
  • Facilitation of a WCM line team.
  • Maintain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Engineering role in regards to PM.
  • Program Accountability

The Manufacturing Supervisor role has two areas of important performance. 

People

  • Interviewing /Hiring – Supervisors are involved in the placement of employees.  This supervisor(s) would insure that Unilever interviewing/hiring expectations are met including screening, interviewing and orientation of new employees.
  • Developing people – The Supervisor must ensure that training is managed in a way that positions the business to be as flexible as possible.
  • Scheduling/PTO – The Supervisor will do all personnel scheduling.  This role will be responsible for scheduling vacations, keeping attendance cards up to-date, procedures up to date, line balancing, days off and all paid time off paperwork and issues.
  • Link with HR – This function of this role is to work with HR to understand and to determine people related objectives.
  • Maintain all documentation, manuals, invoices, purchase orders, and any other relevant paperwork.
  • Identify best practices as they apply to people.  Examples could include but are not limited to line rotation patterns, time off request administration, safety education, providing coverage for WCM members to attend meetings, etc.
  • Ensuring that people feel connected to what’s happening through regular communication about the business.
  • Always taking a humanistic point of view when relating to or communicating with others.

Process

  • Line performance – Supervisors are responsible for making sure that the day to day line issues are being addressed and the machine functions at optimum performance on a daily basis.
  • Technical aptitude – Supervisors must be able to understand the production equipment and be able to solve mechanical problems. 
  • WCM Facilitation – Supervisors participate as active WCM leaders including focusing on continuous improvement and coordination of production floor tasks related to team projects.
  • Line maintenance – it is the responsibility of the Supervisor to make sure that line maintenance is issued and completed.  The Manufacturing Supervisor and the Maintenance Supervisor will need to work together and build a harmonious relationship so that the KPI for downtime can be achieved.
  • Delegate work assignments with consistency– it will be the Responsibility of the Supervisor to delegate work assignments to the proper personnel.  The Supervisor will actively coach as well as follow-ups to ensure those assignments are being completed.
  • Product quality – it is key that Supervisors ensure production of  a consistent and quality product at designated cost.
  • Sanitation – it must be ensured that manufacturing is done in a clean/safe environment. Documentation requirements must be met.
  • Start ups and changeovers – This role is very important because of the demand/change of the business.  Tasks include implementation of the changeover program, startup check sheets, refinement of the process, communicating, planning, production meetings, etc.
  • Work with support departments – It is imperative that the Supervisor works hand in hand with the support departments so that KPIs can be met (e.g. HR, Logistics, QA, etc).   Must understand support departments purpose.
  • RPM, Visual Mgt., 5S – it is the responsibility of the Supervisor to engage in all aspects of WCM, Visual Management, and 5S.  It will be important to engage these activities so that we can show continual improvement in our manufacturing facilities.
  • Coordinate, with production and freezer/warehouse departments, changeovers and moving of equipment to storage.

Working Environment

Work is performed throughout the facility.  Some work will be done in a cold environment.  Potential hazards include proximity of moving machinery, chemical exposure, noise, or heavy lifting.  The position may require an individual to stand, stoop, move equipment; bend, reach, or lift for prolonged periods of time.  PPE includes safety glasses, hearing protection and sanitary footwear.  Supervisor must successfully pass approved HAZWOPER training course.

What You’ll Need To Succeed

  • College degree in a manufacturing related field preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all personnel levels.
  • Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures and ensure clear communication of them.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and work on multiple tasks.                                                                                        
  • Ability to make supervisory-level decisions.
  • Ability to handle disciplinary actions and proper documentation.
  • Must have a basic knowledge of technical machinery or process equipment.
  • Must understand lubrication, sanitation, change-over, KPIs, new products, PM process.
  • Must take ownership of a work center(s) in a WCM role.
