The Head Women's Basketball Coach is an essential member of the coaching staff, who provides leadership and vision within the Athletics Department, as well as among the student athletes. This position is responsible for various aspects of the program, such as recruiting, player development, scheduling opponents, fundraising, strength & conditioning, developing annual service/engagement projects for student-athletes, planning and preparation for games and practices, mentoring and evaluating student-athletes, academic monitoring, and other duties as assigned. The position is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by St. Mary's University, the Lone Star Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In addition, this person must be committed to the educational mission of the University.




ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Teaches and instructs the technical and motivational aspects of the sport of basketball to all student-athletes;

  • Develops, coordinates and supervises practice and training of all student-athletes;

  • Recruits highly competitive individuals while supporting the development of each student-athlete spiritually, academically, physically and socially;

  • Supports the individual academic goals of student-athletes and provides opportunities for academic assistance to student-athletes if required; monitors the academic progress of each participating student-athlete;

  • Observes all St. Mary's University, Lone Star Conference, and NCAA policies and requirements

  • Prepare, evaluate and maintain administrative and certification data for each student-athlete including the scheduling of games, practices and academic counseling of each student;

  • Maintains the budget for the Women's Basketball program and raises funds to enhance the program's budget;

  • Oversees a full-time assistant coach;

  • Interacts with university departments;

  • Performs other duties as assigned.




QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's degree from accredited institution required; Master's degree preferred.

  • Experience coaching and/or participating in a basketball program at the college level preferred.

  • Proven experience working with and improving the performance of elite basketball student-athletes is preferred.

  • Requires excellent speaking, writing and interpersonal skills and manage conflict; Ability to articulate ideas and strategies; Must be self-motivated and have ability to motivate and lead student-athletes toward competitive and academic success.

  • Required to travel with the team (evening and weekend travel required).

  • Must maintain a valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance, and complete the University Van Driver Training within 90 days of employment date.

  • Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance

  • Must have the ability to demonstrate basic skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, and outlook); experience with virtual meeting platforms such as zoom;

  • Must have a high ethical standards and a strong sense of confidentiality

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including sporting and non-sporting events that may occur on weeknights, weekends, and possibly holidays

  • Must have ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.




PHYSICAL DEMANDS:



  • Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business.

  • While performing this role, the employee work outdoors when they work at athletic fields, sporting events, practices, or job sites, work indoors in a gym or other athletic facility.

  • While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. And may be exposed to loud and distracting sounds.

  • Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner.

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
