JOB SUMMARY
This job is responsible for providing a wide variety of professional nursing services which focus on the provision of quality patient care consistent with CHI Franciscan Health (CHI-FH) evidence-based standards/values, applicable regulatory requirements and scope of practice for the nursing profession. Work also includes developing, implementing and assessing the patient plan of care during time of stay in collaboration with physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and the patient/family. An incumbent is engaged in direct patient care, including assessing, planning, coordinating, evaluating and delegating work to members of the patient care team, and for providing education and consultation with patients, families, physicians and other staff members in implementing appropriate nursing interventions for optimal patient care.
Work is performed under standards of safety and care that provide instruction/guidance for taking care of issues and patient needs in the absence of a physician. Requires the application of judgment and critical thinking skills in making decisions regarding patient care (within the scope of practice), including knowledge and integration of evidence-based practices (EBP) through standards, resources, and data, and in the efficient utilization of staff/resources. Work involves continuous contact with physicians, patients, patient families, community agencies, patient care staff and management. An incumbent is accountable for the quality of care provided to patients, and has the authority to direct care, provide education, seek resources at the unit/department level, and delegate appropriate tasks.
Performs related duties as required.


Job Knowledge/Abilities:

Knowledge of the principles, standards, evidence- based practices and protocols relative to the professional nursing process, pathophysiology, emergency procedures, safety principles and safety issues.
Knowledge of CHI-FH policies, standards and procedures and legal regulatory requirements applicable to the nursing profession in general and applicable specialty areas.
Knowledge of CHI-FH procedures relating to risk management and infection control sufficient to maintain the expected level of efficiency.
Knowledge of the evidence- based practices, standards and requirements of patient assessment and evaluation of patient care.
Knowledge of medical equipment, supplies and tools sufficient to conduct patient care activities.
Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their normal dosage, administration, action and adverse reactions.
Ability to develop, implement and evaluate nursing care plans to meet the needs of assigned patients.
Ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and to react quickly in emergency situations.
Ability to interpret medical history performs physical assessments, evaluate patient behavior, obtain, perform and interpret laboratory tests.
Ability to use office equipment, automated systems/applications/software at an acceptable level of competency/proficiency.
Ability to interpret data and use critical thinking skills in making decisions regarding patient care within assigned scope of authority.
Ability to understand and accurately execute the provisions of policies and procedures and the instructions of physicians and other healthcare staff.
Ability to understand and apply current patient safety standards and departmental regulatory requirements.
Ability to understand and apply quality, safety and infection control standards.
Ability to complete records and reports in a timely and accurate manner.
Ability to delegate and oversee the delivery of patient care provided by other members of the care team.
Ability to recognize a patient's psychological reactions to illness and provide continuing support to emotional needs.
Ability to provide individual and family education and health instruction to help patients understand how to prevent disease and maintain good health.
Ability to make clear and accurate explanations of technical conditions to professionals and lay persons.
Ability to read and understand English sufficient to perform the duties of the position.
Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships, including physicians, multidisciplinary care team and patients/families.
Ability to efficiently and effectively utilize available resources, including staff and supply management.

Education

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
One year of related work experience in an acute care setting is preferred.
Possession of a BSN degree is preferred.

Licensure/Certification

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Washington State Board of Nursing.
Current Healthcare BLS Certification.
Specialty certification, as appropriate to the assigned work unit, is strongly preferred.
