The University of Virginia is a highly competitive Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Career Counselor to support the holistic development of student-athletes in various sport programs. The Career Counselor position exists to execute individualized career counseling for student-athletes and comprehensive career initiatives for teams. As part of the student-athlete development team, Career Counselors collaborate with academic coordinators, coaches, and athletics department staff to integrate aspects of career readiness, personal enhancement, community engagement, and leadership into the student-athlete experience. Career Counselors also develop relationships with alumni, donors, campus partners, and employers for the purpose of better preparing student-athletes for meaningful careers beyond their sport. Strategic alignment of unit goals will be developed in coordination with the Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Student Development.

Responsibilities include:

  • Counsel, coach, and individually advise a caseload of student-athletes at all stages of career development, including but not limited to, academic major, career choices, internships or externships, full-time roles, graduate school, networking, job search strategies, professional etiquette, and application processes.
  • Craft communications using a variety of tools to deliver timely information to the student-athlete population, alumni, and external partners.
  • Organize career readiness initiatives designed to engage student-athletes in self-assessment, career development, networking, and employment opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with campus partners, alumni, donors, employers, and corporate partners.
  • Promote the benefits of early career development to multiple constituent groups, with targeted outreach for student-athletes from historically marginalized backgrounds including Pell-eligible, first generation, BIPOC, international, and other identified student groups.
  • Maintain detailed records of all activities, events, and participants for reporting or evaluation purposes.
  • Participate in national and local discussion on student-athlete career development best practices or emerging trends, through organizations like NCDA and N4A.
  • Attend regular staff meetings, professional development, trainings, events, fundraising, and other ancillary activities related to career readiness for student-athletes.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $47,000 - $50,000, dependent upon qualifications.

Anticipated Start Date: Summer 2023

Required Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree

Experience: At least two years of experience working with college students or graduates regarding career planning, advising, counseling, development, placement, networking, or human resource management. Industry-recognized career counseling certification will be provided if not already obtained.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Awareness of and interest in developing a wide range of career planning and advising strategies. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies and in a diverse community. Ability to work on a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Ability to manage competing priorities with attention to detail. Ability to train student interns and staff with regard to understanding or applying strategies for improving career awareness, exploration, and readiness. Ability to gather data, compile information, maintain records, and prepare reports. Ability to analyze and solve problems, using independent judgment to manage and impart confidential information. Demonstrated ability to create programming with attention to inclusivity of diverse populations and constituents. Experience providing career counseling and services to a spectrum of diverse needs and backgrounds.

Computer Applications: Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Certification related to career counseling and assessments or development, such as Strong Interest Inventory, Clifton Strengths, MBTI, etc.

Experience: Four plus years' experience leading a comprehensive program of career planning and development for college student-athletes, including building relationships with employers is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of NCAA, ACC, and University rules and regulations.

Computer Applications: Familiarity with career development software systems preferred
