Head Athletic Coach

Position Summary: Position is responsible for organizing the athletic program at the assigned school. Position conducts practices, motivates students, and instructs student athletes in game strategies and techniques. Develops a winning program that results in student athletes that achieve their potential academically, athletically, socially, and morality.

Essential Duties: This is an extra duty assignment, which will expire at the end of the assignment period and is therefore not protected by continuing contract law. Compensation will be based upon the provision of the Negotiated Agreement.
  • Accepts responsibility for the enrollment, physical conditioning and supervision of players in that sport.
  • Instructs players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
  • Schedules the events for the sport for the season and distributes this information to the academic coordinator, student athletes, parents, principals, etc.
  • Selects the assistant coaches for the sport with assistant from the principal and site athletic coordinator. Monitors the performance of assistant coaches in his/her charge.
  • Organizes and directs individual and group practice activities/exercises.
  • Coaches whose seasons occur during scheduled breaks in the regular school year are required to schedule practices and/or games that cover a minimum of 50% of all breaks that occur during that season (i.e. 10 day break = 5 days of practice and/or games).
  • All players and parents should be notified of these expectations before the season begins.
  • Assesses player's skills, monitors players during competition and practice.
  • Determines game strategy.
  • Supervises athletes during all games/matches and until the building and facilities are locked and secured after the conclusion of an event.
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury.
  • Models sports-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Makes systematic grade, attendance and behavior checks on students to ensure that they remain eligible.
  • Arranges after school and/or Saturday study tables or tutoring for players as needed.
  • Assists students to be academically eligible to compete in high school/college athletics. May assists student athletes with college selection.
  • Works with coaches at other levels and other schools to develop a consistent program in which student athletes try out for teams.
  • Maintains the equipment room in orderly condition and assumes responsibility for its security.
  • Submits "end of season report" with requested information, to the site athletic coordinator.
  • Participates in special activities to include parent's night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
  • Attends meetings, workshops and clinics sponsored through the District and/or OSSAA and/or OCA.
  • Performs support tasks such as distributing and maintaining eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records.
  • Attends staff development meetings, clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities):
  • The head athletic coach must be employed by Oklahoma City Public Schools and must know the policies, rules and eligibility requirements of the specified sport as well as the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association rules.
  • Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, and students.
  • Successfully completion of Care and Prevention of Athletic Injury, Concession Care, Fundamentals of Coaching, and Heat Acclimatization and Heat Illness Prevention training.
  • Ability to tolerate constructive criticism and a commitment to give all players a fair opportunity to be a part of the athletic program.
  • Member of the Oklahoma Coach's Association (OCA).

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities):
  • Some experience as a Head Coach at the high school or college level

Physical/Mental Requirements:
  • Must have adequate manual dexterity to write legibly and perform required duties on the computer.
  • Must have adequate visual acuity to read, interpret and transcribe written material and other required duties.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and clear speaking abilities to interact appropriately with others in person and on the telephone.
  • Requires some stooping, bending, stretching and occasional lifting not to exceed 50 pounds.
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • May periodically require work outside of normal business hours, including weekends, under sometimes stressful conditions in order to meet business needs and strict deadlines.

Work Environment:
  • Office duties will be performed in a well-lighted, climate-controlled environment.
