The Education & Instruction Librarian is a part of the Content & Information Delivery Branch and focuses on educational programming and instructional initiatives for GHL audiences, and on developing content and educational materials for two GHL resources: NCpedia and ANCHOR. Position has the potential for hybrid work with a minimum of three days onsite.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Leading the library’s cross-functional Education Team, responsible for identifying educational program topics, creating and overseeing instructional resources, and setting annual educational goals and activities for the GHL. Conducting user needs assessments and user experience analysis related to educational resources and instructional content.
  • Partnering with the GHL’s Outreach Librarian to plan, develop, and coordinate delivery of collaborative in-person and online programming and training for internal and external audiences about North Carolina government, culture and history topics, genealogical research, and library services and resources.  
  • Serving as administrator of all GHL LibGuides and GHL’s Niche Academy Learning Management System. Planning, developing, and coordinating creation of new LibGuides and tutorials; assessing and updating existing LibGuides and tutorials, and collecting LibGuide and LMS statistics and reports.
  • Working in collaboration with the Digital Projects Librarian to support NCpedia and ANCHOR: conducting fact checking for new and existing NCpedia entries on an ongoing basis; identifying errors and outdated information in entries; and working with content providers and authors to make updates and revisions as appropriate according to the terms of the licensing agreement or permissions statement associated with the content.  
  • Preparing publications or articles for inclusion in digital projects. Conducting quality checks on coding and modifying HTML attributes, as needed, to ensure consistency in style/format before entries go live. Assigning appropriate metadata or taxonomy terms to digital objects for inclusion in digital projects.  
  • Participating in the library’s reference service desk, chat reference, and paging rotation weekly and on occasional Saturdays.
The Government & Heritage Library (GHL) is a hybrid library that offers in-person and virtual library services and collections. The library focuses on North Carolina history, government, and family history. Services include reference and instructional services to people of all backgrounds and ages.   • Demonstrated experience developing and/or delivering instruction and training (e.g., workshops, webinars, educational programs, presentations) for internal and external audiences with varying needs, interests, and levels of knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience providing reference and research assistance in an academic, public, or special library.
  • Demonstrated experience with library research, search strategies, and historical research methodologies, and knowledge of training/instructional principles and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and editing LibGuides and working with learning management systems.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds.
  • Requires reaching, bending, standing, crouching, lifting, walking, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, and keyboarding.
  • Must be able to work in a dusty environment.
Management Preferences:
  • Demonstrated experience creating needs assessments and surveys and analyzing data.
  • Demonstrated experience using virtual teaching/presentation platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience with content management systems and knowledge of digital publishing practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in project planning, assessment, and evaluation. 
  • Demonstrated experience writing and leading grant projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of K-12 North Carolina history.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of North Carolina state government structure and organization.
  • Must demonstrate professional public speaking and presentation skills.
