As part of a global Digital R&D team of world-class digital R&D experts, this position will play a key role in leading our North American Digital R&D group into all of these areas. The focus of this position is on R&D data science, process & application simulation, and cheminformatics and material simulations. In this position, you will turn data into knowledge and knowledge into stories with business value. You will use advanced statistical mathematical models, image analysis, machine learning and neural net algorithms combined with strong business acumen and passion for solving material science problems to deliver insight, recommendations, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions that drive development of new formulations and materials. Major Tasks and Responsibilities Use your combined knowledge of chemistry, materials, and data science to accelerate innovation at Covestro, helping your technical colleagues solve problems, gain knowledge, and delighting them with new digital tools. Develop and co-develop with co-workers new information concepts; help embed new digital skills and unique digital solution capabilities throughout the organization. Meet internal customers’ needs: a) for digital tools to analyze complex data sets, b) to understand structure property relationships through advanced cheminformatics and material simulations, and c) to enhance process and quality control by delivering deep insight from diverse data streams such as process control historians and laboratory information management systems. Serve internal and external customers with SaaS solutions to enable them to more effectively use Covestro materials in their processes and to rely upon Covestro as their partner of choice. Lead and train new employees, trainees, and colleagues in data science concepts and in the use of digital tools. Communicate developments effectively to clients internally and externally at all levels to confirm understanding of unmet needs and validate value propositions of Digital R&D services. Lead and participate in projects with both regional and global reach. WHAT YOU OFFER Minimum Requirements BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related field with 7 years of experience. Graduate degree (MS with at least 5 years’ experience, or PhD with at least 3 years' experience), with experience in: o Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning / Deep Learning o Statistics o Applied Mathematics Preferred Qualifications 10 years post-doctoral industrial R&D experience with computational material simulations, machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies, predictive modeling of material manufacturing processes, and translating data science-driven solutions into useful tools for internal and external customers. Image analytics / functional data analysis Bayesian statistics and modeling Essential Skills Passion for using data analysis and modeling techniques to solve technical problems in chemistry, engineering or material science Minimum 3 years’ experience with R, Python and/or other programming languages such as MatLab, SAS, etc. Business acumen Great communication and presentations skills (English), ability to tell stories with data Collaborative; demonstrated ability to make fruitful connections across different functions and cultures YOUR APPLICATION Are you as curious, courageous and colorful as we are?
